The African Wildcat and domestic cats share an impressive 95.6% of their DNA. Both species are obligate carnivores, meaning their diets should mainly consist of meat; insufficient meat intake can lead to deficiencies in vital nutrients such as taurine. The African Wildcat typically preys on animals that contain 70-80% moisture, allowing them to stay hydrated without needing extra water. In contrast, domesticated cats that primarily consume commercial dry food receive only 6-10% moisture in their diets, which can lead to dehydration. At Thomas’ Tails, we advocate for a return to natural feeding methods by providing our cats with a high-moisture diet of canned or raw food. If canned or raw options are not feasible, we recommend adding water to their dry food. By incorporating moisture into your cat’s meals, you may observe improvements in their weight, coat health, and even increased energy levels, particularly in older cats. We are dedicated to delivering what nature intended for them.
